How to use Fit Page and Fit Width in PencilTime

Choose whether to see the complete portrait page or use a larger writing area while your iPad or iPhone is in landscape.

What are Fit Page and Fit Width?

They control how the current portrait planner page is displayed when the device is in landscape:

  • Fit Page scales and centers the whole page so its top and bottom are visible.
  • Fit Width fills the available width, giving you a larger writing area that scrolls vertically.

Where is the Page View button?

Rotate the device to landscape. The Page View button appears in the top toolbar. At normal size, it shows what the next tap will do rather than the mode you are currently using: inward arrows switch to Fit Page, while outward arrows switch to Fit Width. These controls are not shown in portrait because the portrait layout already uses the normal page presentation.

Can I still zoom?

Yes. Pinch outward with two fingers to zoom in from either Fit Page or Fit Width. The page boundary scales with the canvas, and you can pan around once the page is zoomed.

How do I return quickly after zooming in?

When the page is zoomed beyond the selected mode's normal size, the Page View button changes to the inward-arrow Reset Zoom symbol. Tap it once to reset the page to the selected fit. After the button returns to showing the mode-switch action, tap it again to switch to the other mode.

If the page is already at its normal size, one tap switches modes immediately.

Why can’t I move a Fit Page up and down?

At its normal scale, Fit Page intentionally keeps the entire page centered and prevents unnecessary vertical movement. Pinch to zoom in; panning becomes available when part of the enlarged page is outside the display area.

Which mode is best for an external keyboard?

Fit Page is useful when you want to see the whole page while typing. Fit Width is useful when you want a larger canvas for handwriting or detail work. You can switch at any time without changing the page’s content.

For supported text areas, formatting, and hardware-keyboard troubleshooting, see Typing and text input in PencilTime.

Does this add landscape planner templates?

No. PencilTime 1.11.0 displays the existing portrait planner templates in two landscape viewing modes. Separate wide, landscape-oriented templates are not included in this release.

Does switching modes change or crop my page?

No. It changes only the display scale and scrolling behavior. Handwriting, typed text, stickers, links, files, and shapes stay in their original page positions.
