How to add Links and files in PencilTime
Keep useful destinations and copied files beside the planner or Note page where you need them.
What kinds of links can I add?
Open the sticker menu, choose Links, then choose one of these:
- Page Link opens another PencilTime planner or note page.
- Website Link opens a website in PencilTime’s in-app browser.
- Email Link starts a message in a compatible email app.
- Phone Link hands the number to a compatible calling app.
- Message Link starts a message in a compatible messaging app.
- File Link attaches a file that can be opened in Quick Look.
How do I add a website, email, phone, or message link?
- Open the planner or note page where the link should appear.
- Tap the Sticker button in the top toolbar.
- Choose Links, then choose the link type.
- Enter a label and destination.
- Choose Chip for a compact label or Card for a second detail line.
- Customize the appearance and tap Save.
You may enter a website with or without https://; PencilTime adds it when needed. Phone and message entries may include normal spacing and punctuation.
How do I add a File Link?
- Tap Sticker > Links > File Link.
- Choose one file in the Files picker.
- Choose Chip or Card and customize its appearance.
- Tap Save.
PencilTime imports a copy of the selected file. The link does not remain connected to the original file, so later edits to the original do not update the attached copy.
How do I open a Page Link?
By default, tap the Page Link's arrow to open its destination.
To reduce accidental navigation, choose Long Press Selection in Settings > Planner Settings. The Page Link's arrow will then open its destination with a long press.
Use the selection gesture configured in Settings > Planner Settings on the Page Link body to open its circular editing menu. Single Tap Selection is the default; Long Press Selection requires a press and hold. Use the menu to move, resize, edit, copy, lock, or delete the Page Link.
How do I open a link or file?
Tap the Link's open control. Website Links open in PencilTime's in-app browser. Email, Phone, and Message Links are handed to a compatible app on the device. File Links open in the system Quick Look preview when their format is supported.
How do I move, resize, edit, copy, lock, or delete one?
Use the selection gesture configured in Settings > Planner Settings on the Link body to show the circular editing menu. Use its controls for the desired action. Tap an empty area of the canvas to dismiss the menu.
What is the difference between Chip and Card?
- Chip is compact and shows the main label.
- Card has more room and can show a detail such as the destination or filename.
The display choice does not change where the link opens.
Why won’t a phone, email, or message link open?
The device needs an installed app that can handle that action. Check the destination for typing errors and confirm that an appropriate calling, email, or messaging app is available.
Why does a File Link say the file is missing?
The attachment data may not be available yet, especially while iCloud is still syncing. Keep PencilTime open with a network connection and try again. If it remains unavailable, delete the File Link and attach the original file again.
Are links and files Premium-only?
No Premium plan is required to create and use these items. Premium iCloud sync is required to synchronize PencilTime content across devices.
